A PERMANENT PROVISIONAL SITUATION |
| |
|
Sixty years after the onset of a provisional political situation that is beginning to look fairly permanent, this project reflects on Palestinian cinema through the voices and memories of its exiled and diaspora filmmakers and video artists. Palestinian cinema is a muted tradition: plagued by precarious infrastructure and scarce distribution, it is the blocked image of a displaced people. This project highlights the problem of access by relying largely on interviews with Palestinian directors conducted personally by the artist and on images posted on YouTube, unavailable otherwise. Both voices and images offer landscapes of trauma and death, and pose questions of media reception and access, as it is only through a decentered, un-cinematic medium like the web that these images may reach us.
