  EL PREU DE LA DESMEMORIA

The project reflects on the meaning of the conservation of the rural landscape of Benissa (unlike other neighbouring areas of the coast of the Marina Alta). On the one hand, the project consisted of the building of some iron swings, which recall those which existed in children’s playgrounds in the 60s and, on the other, of the projection of some fragments from conversations with the inhabitants of Benissa, a dialectic between what they had, what they had lost and what they had won.

There was a group of people who were actively involved in social issues in the village: the building industry, the problem of water, the NATO. The building industry was only one more thing. One could see that if you did not get involved, not only the village would become filthy, but visitors would not be interested in the village either. The issue here was to build fast and earn money. But money was earned by a single person, the owner of the company. The workers were still workers and when the work was over, it was really over.
We haven’t had time to stop and think about the model we needed for our city and our environment. We have always acted a little as if we were going along with the circumstances. Now a period of reflection is open for all the different groups of the village… I think that if all of us had been braver and capable to stop and think about the model of city we wanted, probably we would not have reached the level of occupation that we have in all the towns of the Marina Alta. As you have said, Benissa is a special place which has managed to escape from that wild speculation that can be observed in other places.
